Bonobon — Privacy & Data Policy

1. Introduction

We are committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy & Data Policy explains how Bonobon handles personal data. It describes what data is processed, where it is stored, and your rights under applicable data protection laws, including the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

The short version: Bonobon stores all your data locally on your device. We do not operate servers that collect or store your personal information. The app communicates with two external services: OpenAI, which processes the text you submit to generate language learning content, and TikTok, which receives limited device and app-install information so we can measure our advertising campaigns (see Section 5).

3. Data Stored on Your Device

Bonobon stores the following data locally on your device using your browser's or device's local storage:

  • Language preferences (native language, target language, proficiency level)
  • Saved words and vocabulary lists
  • Learning activity statistics (exercises completed, quiz scores)
  • UI preferences (e.g., tip dismissals)

This data never leaves your device and is not accessible to us. It is deleted automatically if you clear the app's data or uninstall the app.

4. Data Sent to OpenAI

When you use AI-powered features (reading content generation, word translation, writing practice, chat), the text you enter is sent to OpenAI's API to generate a response. This is the only transmission of the content you enter or create in the app.

Bonobon does not include any identifying information (name, email, device ID) in requests to OpenAI. Requests contain only the text necessary to generate the requested language learning content.

OpenAI processes this data in accordance with their own privacy policy and data processing terms, available at https://openai.com/policies/privacy-policy.

Legal basis for this processing: Legitimate interests (providing the core AI functionality of the app).

5. Data Sent to TikTok (Advertising Measurement)

To measure how well our advertising campaigns perform, the iOS and Android versions of Bonobon include the TikTok App Events SDK, provided by TikTok. The SDK sends limited information to TikTok automatically. It does not send the content you enter or create in the app, and Bonobon has no user accounts.

The SDK sends:

  • Your device's advertising identifier (the Google Advertising ID on Android, or the Apple advertising identifier (IDFA) on iOS, in each case only where your operating system makes it available)
  • Basic device and app information (operating system version, device model, app version)
  • Two automatic events: app install and app launch (timestamps only)

Purpose: this information is used only to measure the performance of our advertising campaigns, for example to see whether app installs come from TikTok ads. We do not use it to personalize the app or for any other analytics.

TikTok processes this data in accordance with its own privacy policy, available at https://www.tiktok.com/legal/page/row/privacy-policy/en.

You can limit or reset advertising identifier use at any time in your device's operating system settings.

Legal basis for this processing: Legitimate interests (measuring the effectiveness of our advertising).

6. Data We Do Not Collect

Bonobon does not collect or store:

  • Names, email addresses, or contact information
  • Account credentials (no accounts exist)
  • Location data
  • Behavioral analytics or in-app activity tracking (the only events sent to TikTok are app install and app launch — see Section 5)
  • Payment information (handled entirely by Apple App Store or Google Play)

The one exception is the advertising identifier and basic device information described in Section 5, which are sent to TikTok automatically by its SDK for advertising measurement.

7. Cookies and Local Storage

The Bonobon app uses your device's local storage (equivalent to localStorage in web apps) to save your words and progress. This data stays on your device only and functions similarly to a local file — it is not a tracking cookie and is not shared with anyone.

8. Children's Privacy

Bonobon is available to users aged 13 and older. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 13. Bonobon does not ask for any personal information and does not collect personal data on our servers. The advertising measurement described in Section 5 uses only device-level identifiers and basic device information. If you have concerns, please contact us at privacy@bonobon.app.

9. International Data Transfers

Your device data stays on your device and is not transferred internationally by us. Text submitted to OpenAI may be processed on servers outside the European Economic Area (EEA). OpenAI provides appropriate safeguards for such transfers in accordance with GDPR, including Standard Contractual Clauses (SCCs). Data sent to TikTok may be processed by TikTok and its affiliated companies in countries outside the EEA, as described in TikTok's privacy policy.

10. Your Rights Under GDPR

Under GDPR, you have the following rights regarding personal data:

  • Right to access — request information about data we hold about you.
  • Right to rectification — request correction of inaccurate data.
  • Right to erasure — request deletion of your data.
  • Right to restriction of processing.
  • Right to data portability.
  • Right to object to processing based on legitimate interests.

Because Bonobon stores data locally on your device, you have direct control over your data at all times. You can delete all locally stored data by clearing the app's storage or uninstalling the app.

11. Data Security

Since no personal data is stored on our servers, there is no server-side data at risk. Data stored on your device is protected by your device's own security mechanisms (OS-level sandboxing, encryption). We recommend keeping your device's operating system and the Bonobon app up to date.

12. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Policy to reflect changes in the app or legal requirements. The updated version will be published within the app and on our website with a revised effective date. For material changes, we will notify you via an in-app notification.
